Leading With Heart – Nitin Charles

June 16, 2025

Nitin Charles’s Transformative Volunteer Journey
In a world where young people are often underestimated, Nitin Charles stands as a powerful reminder that age is no barrier to making meaningful change. This Computer Science student from Rutgers University has demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to service, earning him the prestigious Presidential Volunteering Services Award and establishing him as an inspiring example for his generation.

Rising to the Challenge During Crisis

When COVID-19’s devastating second wave struck India in 2021, many watched helplessly as hospitals struggled with oxygen shortages and overwhelmed medical systems. But Nitin saw an opportunity to act. Rather than feeling powerless in the face of such enormous need, he channeled his determination into concrete action.

Supporting VFF USA’s Mission Oxygen initiative, Nitin created a GoFundMe campaign that would prove to be a lifeline for those in desperate need. He reached out to neighbors, friends, and family members, building a network of support that extended far beyond his immediate community. His efforts directly supported RDT Bathalapalli Hospital, providing crucial resources during one of the most challenging periods in recent history.

“It was incredibly satisfying to see how collective action could make a real difference,” Nitin reflects on his experience. “During those uncertain times, knowing that our community’s support was reaching people who needed it most through VFF’s Mission Oxygen campaign gave me a profound sense of purpose.”

Experiencing Impact Firsthand

Understanding that effective advocacy requires deep knowledge, Nitin traveled to India during his summer vacation to visit Rural Development Trust. This immersive experience allowed him to witness firsthand the challenges in health and education sectors while engaging with local leadership about sustainable solutions.

“Seeing the reality on the ground changed my perspective completely,” Nitin explains. “It reinforced my belief that volunteering isn’t just about giving back—it’s about building connections and understanding how we can create lasting change together.”

Why Youth Volunteering Matters More Than Ever

Nitin’s journey exemplifies why young volunteers are essential to addressing global challenges:

  • Innovation and Adaptability: Young people bring fresh perspectives and aren’t constrained by “how things have always been done.” They’re quick to adopt new technologies and communication methods that can revolutionize outreach efforts.
  • Peer Influence: Youth volunteers can effectively reach their contemporaries in ways that older volunteers sometimes cannot. They speak the same language, understand current cultural references, and build trust more easily within their age groups.
  • Long-term Commitment: When young people develop a passion for service early, they often maintain that commitment throughout their lives, creating sustained impact over decades.
  • Bridge Building: As digital natives with global perspectives, young volunteers naturally build connections across cultures and continents, fostering international understanding and cooperation.

A Model for Others to Follow

Nitin’s recognition with the Presidential Volunteering Services Award isn’t just an acknowledgment of his individual contributions—it’s a call to action for other young people to recognize their own potential for impact. His story demonstrates that meaningful change doesn’t require vast resources or special credentials; it requires compassion, determination, and willingness to act.

As Nitin continues his volunteer journey, his story serves as inspiration for countless others. Each person he motivates to get involved creates their own ripple effect of positive change. This multiplier effect is perhaps the most powerful aspect of youth leadership—one committed young person can inspire an entire generation to action.

At VFF USA, we’ve witnessed firsthand how Nitin’s dedication has motivated other young volunteers to step forward. His example proves that when we invest in supporting youth volunteers, we’re not just addressing immediate needs—we’re cultivating the next generation of global leaders.

As Nitin’s continued efforts inspire many to become forces for good, we’re reminded that the future belongs to those willing to act with courage, compassion, and commitment. The question isn’t whether young people can make a difference—it’s how many will choose to follow Nitin’s example and discover their own power to change the world.
