From Seeing Change to Becoming Part of It: Nikki Charles
A young student’s connection with rural India is inspiring her to support children’s education and encourage others to take part.
Nicole “Nikki” Charles is a ninth-grade student at Cherokee High School in Marlton, New Jersey. She dreams of pursuing a career in psychiatry, loves dancing, and plays lacrosse. Alongside school and her other interests, she makes time to volunteer for causes she cares about.
Through Vicente Ferrer Foundation USA (VFF USA), Nikki is supporting educational opportunities for children in rural India and inviting her own community to get involved. A visit to Bathalapalli Hospital left a lasting impression on her.
A connection that began years ago
During a visit to India, Nikki had the opportunity to see Bathalapalli Hospital, supported by the Vicente Ferrer Foundation.
She remembers being struck by the scale of the hospital and what it meant for people in a rural setting to have access to care. Seeing a hospital serving children and families who might otherwise have fewer healthcare options gave her a perspective different from her everyday life in New Jersey.
The visit helped her understand how access to healthcare can affect a family’s life. Years later, she still remembers that experience and the work she saw.
Similar dreams and different opportunities
Nikki has traveled to India often. These visits have made her more aware of the circumstances faced by many young people her own age and the differences in the opportunities available to them.
A student in rural India may dream of becoming a doctor, teacher, engineer, or artist, just as a student in New Jersey might. For some children, financial circumstances, distance from school, or family responsibilities can make those ambitions harder to pursue.
That understanding is part of what makes supporting children’s education meaningful to Nikki. She wants more young people to have the chance to explore their interests and work toward the futures they imagine for themselves.
Turning awareness into action
Nikki became involved in VFF USA’s India Giving Day campaign to support children and educational opportunities in rural India. She reached out to people in her community, shared why the cause mattered to her, and encouraged them to participate.
Her involvement gave her a practical way to act on what she had learned during her visits. By talking about the work and inviting others to support it, she helped bring attention to children whose opportunities can be limited by circumstances beyond their control.
For a student balancing school and other commitments, those conversations were a way to contribute. They also showed how participating in a cause can begin with the people we already know.
Finding her voice as a young leader
Nikki also had the opportunity to address an audience gathered in support of VFF USA. Standing before the community, she spoke about what inspired her to get involved and encouraged others to support the effort.
Her contribution shows one way young people can begin to lead: by learning about an issue, speaking about why it matters, and helping others find a way to contribute.
Building leadership through everyday experiences
Community service is part of Nikki’s life beyond VFF USA as well. She participates in the Evesham Police Explorers Program and volunteers for causes she feels connected to.
Along with dance and lacrosse, these activities give her opportunities to work with others and take on responsibilities. They are part of how she is learning about her interests and the contribution she wants to make.
Her ambition to pursue psychiatry reflects her interest in understanding people and helping others. While that career is still ahead of her, volunteering gives her a way to put that interest into practice now.
Making the circle bigger
Through her involvement, Nikki hopes to encourage other young people to find a cause they care about and take part. That might mean volunteering locally, sharing information about an issue, or bringing friends together to support a project.
For VFF USA, her story reflects the spirit of #PowerOfUs. When someone shares a cause with their community and invites others to participate, the work gains support from people who may be learning about it for the first time.
Nikki is still exploring what her future will look like. In the meantime, she is using her time and voice to support children’s education and encouraging others to join her.
