Our annual Recipe for Empowerment gala is coming up on October 6 at the Wonderbread Factory. With so many accomplished local chefs on board, guests will enjoy a world of yummy delights amidst an enticing silent and live auction. VFF USA is excited to showcase the three different cultures that have helped to shape our success and will feature top American, Spanish, and Indian chefs. We welcome back some chefs from last year’s event and bring some new ones into the fold, each with an interesting take on how food can unite and delight people. Raise a glass of Grapes of Spain Wine or Biscayne Brewing Company Beer to these amazing chefs.
Returning talent Gregory Booth of The Kitchen at Blue Creek provides a personal chef and catering service that has delighted celebrities and has been showcased in numerous media outlets including, ABC’s “Celebrity Wife Swap” and “Let’s Talk Live.” We’re equally excited that Kristy Ferretti will join us again. Her company A Loving Table specializes in bringing people together through creative interpretations of cuisine that defined her childhood growing up in the US.
Also transporting is the cuisine of Dadisi Olutosin of Plated Food Groupe, who will share inventive dishes influenced by the flavors of West Africa, the Caribbean and the American South. Likewise Arkansas-bred Logan McGear of Smoke & Barrel loves to explore flavors from around the world in classic American dishes like barbecue.
Gala newcomer Dean Gold of Dino’s Grotto is a leader in the farm to table movement and a true localvore who reinterprets traditional American dishes. We like to say that his farm-to-table approach will be table-to-farm, since proceeds from the gala will directly empower local farm communities in India!
An impressive trio of Spanish chefs will also participate in this special evening. The very popular Jaleo restaurant is supporting our event once again with Robbie Meltzer, head chef of the DC location, will be dishing up “conos de queso”. For those craving Spanish ham, Master Slicer Francisco Carrasco of Ham, Cheese, and Wine will be partnering with Jose Andres and Fermin for this special occasion. Award winning paella chef, Danny Lledo of Slate Wine Bar will be preparing a creative fideo paella featuring both vegetarian and duck confit options for all to enjoy.
It wouldn’t be a proper benefit in support of rural India without showcasing the marvels of Indian cuisine. Daljeet Singh of Aroma is inspired by the authentic home cooking of beautiful, spice-rich North India, where he was trained to provide guests with a transformative experience. This year we also have a special treat with a father-son duo! Born in the south of India and trained in the north, returning chef K.N. Vinod is the critically acclaimed co-owner of Indique in Washington D.C, Indique Heights Catering in Gaithersburg, and Rockville’s Bombay Bistro. His son Rahul Vinod, inspired by dad’s success, is opening up Rasa this fall and has a self-described mission to make Indian food less intimidating.
