When Lakshmi Devi was just a year old, polio crippled her legs and right arm. But today she is fearless and a strong voice for people with disabilities. Neighbors flock to her small store to buy candy, spices, and other household goods as well as to learn about resources for loved ones with disabilities.
For 46 years, VFF has helped disabled people such as Lakshmidevi learn job skills, build businesses, and become leaders in their communities. Currently, VFF supports over 1,200 community self-help groups. These groups are a meeting place for people facing major barriers to employment as a result of their physical or mental disabilities. VFF is Crowdrising for “Work Without Limits” to raise $15,000. With your support, 17 individuals in our community self-help group will receive training, start-up capital, and support.
In India, an estimated 2% of the population has some form of disability. Yet, people with disabilities are still not fully recognized within families or society. Through our programs, VFF supports more than 30,000 people with disabilities by providing specialized health care, and education opportunities, among other services. We’ve also developed community self-help groups called “sanghams” so that high-functioning people with disabilities, like Lakshmi, can become productive — and respected — members of society.
Help us to continue serving this vulnerable population and contribute today.
