How a humble bicycle can change a child's life
In India, 100 million children of school age do not attend school and the literacy rate of girls from marginalized groups is below 35%. Rural students often support the family businesses and cannot spend more than an hour to travel to and from school. A simple solution is sometimes the most effective.
A bicycle changes the conversation for at-risk kids. Not only do bicycles greatly reduce the time it takes to travel to school, they also serve as an incentive to stay in school. We believe that getting an education is critically important for every child. To improve the future of the Anantapur region, we believe in investing in the national treasure of India — its children.  The return on investment for educated youth improves opportunities for the entire community.

Over the past few months, the Vicente Ferrer Foundation has hosted a handful of fundraisers to be able to buy bikes for 48 boys and 30 girls in rural India. Over the years, our bicycle project has proven to be highly effective: Nearly 7,000 girls from villages where VFF operates already have a bike. Since then, 75% of those students attend 90% of the classes in schools that are more than three miles away from their home.
